40 Years of K.I.T. Group: How Coincidence, Courage, and Curiosity Sparked a Company

Every company has an origin story.
Ours begins with coincidence, a bold decision, and a deep belief in doing things differently.

In 1984, freshly graduated in business administration and with a background in journalism, Willy E. Kausch arrived in Berlin. His original dream was to become a sports editor. What changed that path? Life — and a woman working in a Berlin hotel who challenged him to stop dreaming and start acting.

That challenge led Willy into the world of travel and event management at Berolina Reisen, where he learned the fundamentals from the ground up: how to calculate travel programs, organise large group logistics, and how to apply for visas for busloads of visitors travelling into the former GDR. Berlin, still divided at the time, was booming with curiosity, visitors, and opportunity.

After several years, Willy was offered a secure job with a large agency in Frankfurt. Instead of taking it, a client gave him a different piece of advice:

“Why don’t you go independent? If you do, we will work with you.”

That moment became the starting signal.

With 50,000 German Marks in startup capital guaranteed by a school friend, Willy founded K.I.T. Group in Berlin in 1986. The decision was not without risk. Shortly after founding the company, a key client moved a major conference to a location outside of Germany. Money became tight. For a while, it looked as though the venture might end before it truly began.

But that pressure sparked innovation.

Instead of waiting, he began offering incentive programs directly to hotels, something no one else was doing at the time. He turned unused time slots into value, filled buses, and created new experiences for guests. What started as a workaround quickly became a scalable business model.

In the early years, K.I.T. Group was a one-man show. Slowly, the team grew: first an assistant, then more colleagues, and eventually partners. Every penny was reinvested. Salaries were modest. The ambition, however, was not.

Willy Kausch never wanted to be just another agency.

While many competitors sold the same standard programs, he looked for a niche, drawing on his interest in history, culture, and storytelling. Events in museums, themed evenings, carefully curated experiences: K.I.T. Group was not just organising travel or logistics. It was selling experiences

That philosophy laid the foundation for what K.I.T. Group would become in the decades to follow.

Forty years later, this spirit still defines K.I.T. Group:

  • the courage to take risks,
  • the curiosity to explore new formats,
  • and the conviction that meaningful experiences matter.

This anniversary is not just about looking back.
It is about remembering why K.I.T. Group started, and carrying that mindset forward into the future.

This was the beginning. And it is only one chapter of the story.
